The brand that gave India the slogan 'Hamara Bajaj', a catchphrase identical with a whole generation, will cease to exist come April this year. Bajaj Auto Managing director Rajiv Bajaj recently stated his aim to remove the Bajaj brand and, in its place, establish its top-selling Pulsar and Discover as split brands in their their own light. This is not an unusual move for brands in European and foreign countries but will certainly be a first for Indian automotive manufacturers who rely on family names for their product range (read TVS, Mahindra and Tata).

“He has already started the process so today on a Pulsar, the Bajaj name is seen only on the engine. The same is the case with Discover. Our three-wheeler has Bajaj in small font while the initial ‘RE’ is in much larger font. One day, We will fall the Bajaj name from there also completely”, Rajiv Bajaj disclosed in a recent interview. He said consumers know that the product is made from Bajaj, just like Audi product is coming from Volkswagen. But there is no Volkswagen on the Audi scheme. This creates a opinion that there is something more in the product”, he added. The project is spearheaded by Fitch, the worldwide design organization that have collaborated with brands as diverse as Aditya Birla Group, Boeing, Reliance ADAG, Tata and Microsoft in the past.

Bajaj Auto Plans Distribution Expansion

Bajaj manufacturers plans massive distribution expansion in Indian market. Bajaj India plans on adding one hundered thirty new dealerships and upgrading 1,100 service centers by the end of 2011. The new dealers, largely in small towns, would take the total number to more than six hundered dealerships across India. The company has great reach of Bajaj Pulsar across the country but the same cannot be said with the Bajaj Discover which has huge potential in semi-urban towns.

Bajaj India is also working with a reputed international retail design agency to enhance the experience of consumers at its dealerships. A typical Bajaj dealership in these towns requires 1800 sq ft. of showroom space, 2200 sq ft. of workshop space, and has the direct employment potential of approx fifty people which can significantly boost the local economy by creating 7,000 new jobs.

Pulsar And Discover Get Dearer

All those planning to buy a Bajaj Bike will have to excavate a bit deeper in their pockets. For Bajaj Auto has hiked the prices of their motorcycles starting this October, owing to increased prices of raw materials. The price go up is different for every model spanning from Rs. 500-2000. At the base of this price skyscraper lies the Pulsar 135 still carries the same price tag. The lower capacity bikes like the Platina and Discover series are costlier by Rs. 500-1000 while the Pulsar 150, 180 and 220 prices have increased by Rs. 500-800.

The cruiser styled bike Avenger boasting chrome treatment and fat rubber is obviously the worst unnatural with a price hike of just over Rs. 2000. With the festival season approaching, manufacturers generally plan to reduce the prices of their bikes but with input costs going way overboard, a price hike was inevitable even for giants like Bajaj.

Bajaj Bikes To Become Independent Brands

Bajaj India is planing a restructuring exercise which will see independent brands from the 2-wheeler manufacturer. The company will distance itself from the parent brand and focus on just four motorcycle brands - Boxer, Discover, Pulsar and KTM, as well as the rear-engine three-wheeler brand, phasing out the rest. Bajaj has already stopped making bikes such as the XCD 125 and 135, Wind and Caliber. Others like the CT100 will be made for some export markets, but these models will migrate to the Boxer brand vertical in a year. The company has no plans to wind down the entry-level Platina, but there will be no more investments. The new strategy will also help Bajaj stand out from arch rival Hero Honda.

"The Bajaj brand is very diffused, covering everything from heaters and hair oil to insurance and financial services. Correcting that problem is the biggest opportunity for the company," said Mr Bajaj. "We have to be clear about what our brand stands for. A sporty Pulsar and the humble auto rickshaw are as different as chalk and cheese," he added.

New 2010 Bajaj Pulsar 135 Is Coming!!

Bajaj India seems to be all set to rock with New Pulsar 135, which is expected to be launched on 8th December, 2009. The teaser website is up - http://goodbyetraffic.in/ - which shows a black Pulsar wrapped under white semi-transparent cover which gives a glimpse of New Pulsar 135 . On hovering the cursor around fuel tank you can see the Bajaj Pulsar logo with smart new design air scoops which gels very well with the design of the fuel tank. On hovering at the rear end of the bike you can see it will feature split seat with nitrox suspension.

No official statement has been made about the technical details, specifications and price of New 2010 Pulsar 135. May be the engines will remain the same - it can be only a cosmetic makeover to give pulsar a fresh lease of life. Let's wait and watch!!

Bajaj Pulsar 350 Launch By 2012

Bajaj Auto is half way through the development of a 350cc Bajaj Pulsar scheduled for commercial launch by 2012. The fastest iteration of the Pulsar is expected to come with liquid cooling but Bajaj engineers are finding it tough to design a effective cooling system, which is essential for such a high capacity powerplant.

The reason for using an oil cooled system over a water cooled system is the saving in space and weight. Lesser weight will help in better performance and mileage. The 350cc engine platform would be used in various variants and will help Bajaj to foray into the premium motorcycle segment in many countries including India.

Bajaj to launch 220cc Pulsar on June 23

CNBC-TV18 reports that Bajaj Auto is all set to launch the fastest bike made in India on June 23. This bike will be in the higher 220cc segment. The all-new 220cc Pulsar will replace the old model as it sports an all new DTS-i engine.

Here is a verbatim transcript of Swati Khandelwal's comments on CNBC-TV18.

We pick up from sources that this bike will be launched on June 23. This is on the flagship model that Bajaj already has-the Pulsar. Bajaj's new 220 cc Pulsar will replace the old model as it sports an all new DTS-i engine.

The major attribute to this bike would be its speed. In fact, we understand from sources that it is going to be the fastest bike ever made in India. Its top speed will be over 140 km/hour and that is almost 15 km/hour higher than its predecessor. We also understand that this bike is going to be priced much lower than its predecessor. The earlier version of the vehicle came in at about Rs 85,000 and this is close to Rs 70,000 ex-showroom Delhi.

This bike is going to compete with the existing Yamaha's FZ16 and R15. We understand from sources that Bajaj is hoping to sell or at least capture one-third of the total super sports bike market, which is the Rs 65,000 plus market. To garner that, they will be looking for selling about one-third of the total market which is about 15,000 units per month.

Bajaj Auto Q4 net profit down 49.79%

Bajaj Auto has reported a 49.79% decline in its net profit, at Rs 69.14 crore, for the period January-March 2009. The company had earned a net profit of Rs 137.71 crore in the year-ago period.

At 375,439 units, Bajaj's sales sales were down 22% during Q4 FY 2008-09, as compared to 482,912 units sold in the corresponding period last year. Consolidated total income during the quarter was down 8.61%, at Rs 1,883.27 crore, as compared to Rs 2,060.61 crore in Q4 FY 2007-08.

Bajaj Auto sold a total of 1.91 million two-wheelers during FY 2008-09, as compared to 2.1 million units during the year-ago period, a decline of around 11%. However, Bajaj is working on various things to remedy the situation. The company is working on a brand-new scooter with which it expects to be able to take on the Honda Activa, which is the biggest bestseller in its segment.

Bajaj is also pushing ahead with its made-in-China budget bikes for some of its exports markets. For India, the Pune-based company is all set to launch a new range of bikes, developed in collaboration with KTM, by early 2010.
