According to a Bloomberg report, Kawasaki will start shifting the production of some of its medium-sized and large motorcycles from Japan to Thailand, from next year. The aim would be to take advantage of lower costs and cheaper labour in Thailand. Kawasaki isn't the first major motorcycle manufacturer to go to Thailand - Triumph already has two manufacturing facilities in that country.

Kawasaki remains the only Japanese two-wheeler manufacturer that still hasn't managed to set up operations in India. The company does have some kind of an agreement in place with Bajaj Auto though, and the latter is expected to launch the Kawasaki Ninja 250R in India before the end of this year.

Bajaj India is going to launch a new bike in next four months. The new bike would be Bajaj's attempt to put some speed breakers in the path of the Splendor and Passion motorcycles from Hero Honda, which rule the roost.

Bajaj has a meager 9% market share in the 100cc segment while its rival Hero Honda has 80%. It had launched the Discover 100cc motorcycle last month to give it some hope of moving ahead and not losing more to HH. The 100cc segment contributes to one-third of the total motorcycle market in India.

Hero Honda's 100cc models are CD Dawn, CD Deluxe, Splendour, and Passion while Bajaj has just the Discover and Platina. Naturally, progress will happen only if Bajaj fattens its line-up. With the new launches, Bajaj hopes to inch towards its previous overall 2-wheeler market share of 36%, which now has slipped to 21%.

It's the age of retailing and more car manufacturers are entering systematic retailing market looking at the growing economy and changing buying patterns. As India remains unfazed by the economic crisis around the world, Indian buyers still hold better purchasing power.

TVS Motors has now entered the car accessories market with its 'CARPLUS' stores to sell auto accessories in the retail market. Lucas India Service Limited, a part of TVS Motors will own these stores in India and will offer complete range of car accessories under one roof.

The first car store of CARPLUS is located in Gurgaon spread over an area of 4000 sq. ft. the showroom is well-equipped with world class accessories and showcases an impressive range of the same.

"With the number of new passenger car models being launched in India, the car accessories market is all set to witness an exponential growth over the next few years. Currently, 35-40 per cent of the total car accessories market estimated at Rs. 4,200-4,500 crore lies in the unorganized sector. It is imperative, therefore, for players like Lucas to carve a niche in the mind of the consumer and bring home the value proposition.Given the nascent state of organized retail and the rapid evolution of the industry, it is crucial for retailers, manufacturers, real estate developers, logistics providers and partners along the value chain to work in a collaborative spirit," said Arvind Balaji, director, Lucas Indian Service Limited.

Hero Honda is undeniably the market leader in the 100cc space with over 50% market share in this segment. It is an equal joint venture between the Hero Group and Honda Motor Company; HMSI is a wholly owned arm of Honda and operates as a distinct entity. Speculations have been on the rise about HMSI's imminent 100cc entry creating unnecessary competition for Hero Honda.

Clearing the air about the same Mr. Pawan Munjal, managing director, Hero Honda, said "We are trying not to compete head on while designing (the new 100cc bike) but obviously we cannot avoid some cannibalization. It will happen. The two-wheeler market in India operates in a very narrow band of 100-225cc at best. So differentiation is quite difficult anyway. Even within Hero Honda, model range differentiation is very difficult".

He added that through a model committee, which comprises representatives of all Honda group companies in India, Hero Honda is trying to avoid competition (among group companies). But to a question on whether Hero Honda and HMSI would collaborate on the marketing and distribution front, Munjal replied in the negative.

"We have no plans to do any joint marketing or joint product distribution. But yes, we do discuss production capacity and supply chain synergies with HMSI." In fact, when Hero Honda was using only some of its installed capacity at the new facility in Haridwar last year, Munjal said he offered to make some of HMSI's bikes there!

And though he did not elaborate on supply chain synergies, vendors point out that Honda is already looking to source "common, standard" parts used in the Hero Honda Splendor for the new 100cc bike from HMSI. One of their key parts suppliers said "We have been told that many parts such as body and engine parts would be common for the Splendour and the new Honda 100cc.

This way, Honda wants to keep the costs down and also arrive at standardization of key parts faster. But not all HMSI suppliers supply to Hero Honda as well. So obviously the production synergies Hero Honda is talking about may be slightly difficult to achieve".

In addition to this, HMSI is aiming at an initial production volume of about 2 lakh units for the 100cc bike, which is slated for launch early next year. Its volume expectations indicate that the bike won't make an immediate dent in the 100cc universe, where Hero makes and sells many times more already.

Honda has decided to quit the geared scooter segment in India. It will phase out its Eterno 150cc model this year. The company will not focus only on the gearless scooters and establish its brand value in the gearless scooter segment. "We will stop producing Eterno. We will not stay in this segment (geared scooter). Eterno will be phased out," HMSI President and CEO Shinji Aoyama.

Honda currently has Activa model in the gearless scooter segment currently priced at Rs. 39,800. It launched the latest and upgraded model new Activa yesterday in India. The new scooter comes with new front and rear section. The new activa is powered by 109cc 4-stroke engine pumping out 8bhp at 7500rpm and 0.9Kgm at 5500rpm.

It has reduced tank capacity of 5.3 litre and sports a new braking system. The vehicle comes to complete halt even with one brake. This is good for those who are uncertain which brake to use to stop the vehicle completely. The CBS system applied front braking as well whenever the rear brake is applied. The new activa comes in two variants - Activa standard and Activa deluxe.
