Two-wheeler sales on a high

Starting with the country's largest two-wheeler maker, Hero Honda, which reported a 10% increase in sales for the month of March. HH sold 3,53,342 units as against 3,20,594 units the same month last year.

Overall in the last fiscal, the auto major managed to sell 37,22,000 units as against 33,37,142 units, thereby effecting a growth of 12%. Hero Honda Motors Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Pawan Munjal said that the firm would continue expanding its two-wheeler customer base by exploring markets across geographies - rural as well as urban - and across customer segments.

The company said with the performance in the fiscal year 2008-09 it now commands a share of over 57 per cent in the over 75,00,000-units domestic market. The big gainer last month was Yamaha (IYM) and rightly so expressed their delight with the firm's excellent performance. The company registered an impressive growth of 45.3 % in the sales. IYM sold 14558 units in March 2009 as against 10022 units in March 2008.

India to Become Exports Hub for Two Wheelers

The Indian auto makers are seriously eyeing India as a potential exports hub for their automobiles. Yamaha now intends to make India as its exports hub for its two wheelers and engines. The company intends to plan its shipments to Japan and the US from India. It has already strengthened its dealer network and after sales service network in India. It further intends to have more than 600 dealerships across India by 2010.

Yamaha will invest nearly Rs .240 crores in the country by 2010-11 to develop two India-specific models. "India can be an export hub for our two legendary models - FZ16 and R15. Also we export bike engines in substantial amount to our other global operations," India Yamaha Motor CEO and Managing Director Yukimine Tsuji. "Japan and the US has been asking for our bikes and are interested in importing from India," he added.

Tsuji also stated that the company exported nearly 40,000 bikes and 10,000 engines from India to countries like Nepal, South Africa, Sri Lanka, and Latin American countries. He further added that India is the second largest exporter for Yamaha after China. Now the company intends to cater to demands from the US and Japan.

Yamaha plans to make India an export hub

Riding the comeback tide in India, Yamaha India has uncovered its plans to increase the number of dealers and after-sales service network in India. This will be key to the company's future offerings to gain exposure in this highly competitive market.

Yamaha also plans to sell spare parts for its popular RX and RD series models as well. Read on for more. The company will be investing around Rs 240 crore in 2010-11 on developing more than two new India specific models, is also aiming to have a total of 600 dealerships by 2010. Expect the Yamaha Scooters and the R125 to make their Indian debut very soon. India is Yamaha's second biggest exporter and second to China.

The company, considering the current economic slowdown, expects to ship about 30,000 bikes, but the number of engines would depend on the worldwide situation. The company is looking at a much bigger number once the condition improves.
