Harley-Davidson expects to start selling its best in the world cruiser motorcycles in January 2010. The company has established a subsidiary to be located in Gurgaon, near Delhi, and has begun the process of seeking dealers. The company's current approach is to import its motorcycles, accessories and riding gear, and it will continue to evaluate how best to evolve its approach to the market as Harley-Davidson's business in India grows. Harley-Davidson is the global leader in cruising and touring motorcycles and ranks as one of the strongest brands in the world, with motorcycle sales now in more than 70 countries.

The company will focus its initial steps in India on growing the Harley-Davidson brand through a variety of consumer experiences and on establishing a local dealer network. The Harley-Davidson subsidiary in India will be led by Managing Director Anoop Prakash, who said the company has begun the process of identifying initial dealers in Mumbai, Delhi, Bangalore, Hyderabad and Punjab State.

Harley-Davidson, the cult american bike manufacturer has launched two brand new bikes for 2009 alongwith revisions in the existing model range. The new VRSCF V-Rod muscle is based on the past VR series but has a new rear fender design, dual side exhasut pipes along with revised bodywork to accomodate the fat 240 mm rear tire.

The second new model is a trike christened the Tri Glide, which comes with air suspension at the back and a new rear differential. With Tri Glide, H-D wants to capture the growing trend for these motorcycles in the USA. The revisions for the exisiting models include new revised, stiffer frame for the 2009 touring range. The new Duna and Sportster models feature a new front fender which follows the profile of the front tire more closely, thereby improving looks.

Harley-Davidson will buy Italian motorcycle maker MV Agusta Group for about $109 million to boost its presence in Europe. The deal will enable Harley-Davidson expand into the European market. Sport, bikes constitute about 80 percent of sales in Europe, Harley-Davidson Chief Executive Jim Ziemer said."Harley-Davidson's sales there have been growing in the double digits for the past three years, and the company now has nearly 10 percent of that market."

The MV Agusta aquisition gives Harley-Davidson a chance to go after European sport motorcycle riders, who tend to be younger than U.S. motorcycle riders, Ziemer said.Sport motorcycles are typically high performance and require riders to lean forward. Heavy weight motorcycles like Harley-Davidson's top-selling touring bikes are heavier and allow for a more laid-back riding style since drivers can sit upright.

The heavier-weight bikes are more popular in the U.S., but worldwide, sport motorcycles account for half of all sales. It's a big market for Harley-Davidson to enter. "This gives us a better way to get into that and understand that customer base at a different level than we're currently playing at," Ziemer said.
