Yamaha to work on fuel-efficient 125cc motorcycle engine

According to a report on Nikkei, Yamaha Motor Co. is working on a new, highly fuel-efficient engine which it will soon introduce in Southeast Asian markets, followed by India, South America and Europe.

This new engine (of undisclosed capacity, though we expect it to be a fuel-injected 125cc unit) will offer up to 20% better fuel economy than other motorcycle engines of similar displacement and output.

The new fuel-injected Yamaha engine will also be fully emissions compliant with the toughest of emissions laws worldwide. Yamaha is said to be very serious about speeding up the development work on this new engine, and is even shifting as many as 100 of its engineers from big bike projects to work on this new, fuel-efficient 125cc engine.

With Honda/HMSI also all set to launch a new 100cc bike - which is likely to have a very fuel efficient, fuel-injected 100cc engine, it seems there is going to be a fresh round of battles in the "most fuel efficient bike" segment in the country.
